Speakers summarized results from the 2002 Arlington Workshop on the Scientific Requirements for Mitigation of Hazardous Comets and Asteroids, proposed state-of- the-art missions to NEOs, discussed utilizing nuclear explosives to deflect an oncoming NEO, and described how very efficient, low thrust engines might be used to move an NEO.

This session was the first of two discussing design of missions to deflect an approaching NEO. Topics included the use of fission power for asteroid deflection missions, close proximity operations for implementing deflection strategies, and the mechanics of moving asteroids
