Mitigation Methods and Approaches
Keynote, Morning Session: Andrea Carusi, European Space Agency
Day 2 Morning Session: Mitigation
Methods and Approaches
Chaired by:
David Morrison, NASA Astrobiology Institute, NASA Ames
Clark Chapman, Southwest Research Institute
Speakers summarized results from the 2002 Arlington
Workshop on the Scientific Requirements for Mitigation
of Hazardous Comets and Asteroids, proposed state-of-
the-art missions to NEOs, discussed utilizing nuclear
explosives to deflect an oncoming NEO, and described
how very efficient, low thrust engines might be used to
move an NEO.
Day 2 Luncheon Speaker: Lindley Johnson,
Planetary Science Institute
Keynote for Afternoon Session: Dennis Byrnes, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Day 2 Afternoon Session: Mission
Design: Key Technologies
Chaired by:
Rusty Schwieckart, B612 Foundation
This session was the first of two discussing design of
missions to deflect an approaching NEO. Topics
included the use of fission power for asteroid
deflection missions, close proximity operations for
implementing deflection strategies, and the mechanics
