Day 4, Morning Session:  Policy Implications

Dealing successfully with political and policy issues will be critical to assuring that a NEO deflection mission accomplishes its goal in a timely fashion.  Speakers discussed what happens when a deflection mission affects the impact point (e.g., moves the impact from one geographic location to another or one country to another), the role of international cooperation in planetary defense, political and policy implications of using nuclear explosives in space, legal requirements for planetary protections, and a national program to remove the threat of hazardous NEOs.

Day 4, Afternoon Session: Looking Ahead Panel Discussion

Session chairs from previous sessions summarized key points and recommendations from their sessions and answered questions from the audience. Discussion included what should be done in the next four years to increase the likelihood of a successful mitigation mission.  Information and recommendations from this session are included in the conference White Paper.
